In 1864 Harmonika, the banner carrier of an American cavalry squadron witnesses the massacre of Sand Creek. He decides to flee with two other soldiers, because he is about to be courtmartialed for breaking the flag pole. He kills a young Indian woman and a boy while on the run, and he also severely wounds another young Indian woman, Fawn, the sister of Hard Rock. Hard Rock wants to see him killed but Fawn testifies that he is the man that rescued her.

Therefore, Gray Elk releases him and he stays with the Cheyenne. Gradually, Hard Rock starts to trust the white man and even gives him his sister Fawn as wife. One day the camp is raided, and Fawn and her unborn child are killed. Harmonika leaves Hard Rock in order to find the murderer of his wife. Slowly he falls into dissolution until he finds Hard Rock among a group of Indian prisoners. He frees his Indian brother, and from then on they fight together for freedom.
