In the Black Hills, east of the Rocky Mountains, gold was found in the second half of the 19th century. Speculators, adventurers and gold diggers, merchants and settlers moved in a continuous stream to this area, which according to treaty is guaranteed soley to the Dakota Indians.

The golddigger town of Tanglewood becomes the setting for the open fight between the warriors of the Farsighted Falcon and the white adventurers. The white men are only able to avoid defeat with the intervention of the military. Through courage and ruse the Falcon and his warriors manage to free chief Gray Bear, to triumph over the troops, and to reassemble the scattered members of the tribe and escape to a safe place. Bludgeon, the unscrupulous enemy of peaceful settlers and of the Dakota Indians is killed in a duel by chief Farsighted Falcon.
